Dubai to Sharjah: the right route at the right hour

On paper it's a 20-minute hop. In the evening rush it's the most congested corridor in the country, because a huge share of Dubai's workforce sleeps in Sharjah. The trick isn't driving faster; it's picking the right road for the clock. Here's the resident's playbook, with the live map to confirm before you leave.

The three routes, honestly

1. Ittihad Road (E11): shortest, moodiest

The direct city-to-city artery through Al Mamzar into Al Taawun. Off-peak it's unbeatable: 20 minutes door to door. From late afternoon it becomes a parking lot in the Sharjah direction, and the morning reverse is just as bad. If the clock says rush hour, pretend this road doesn't exist.

2. Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311): the workhorse

Loops inland past Mirdif and enters Sharjah near University City. Ten extra kilometres that routinely save half an hour at peak. Evenings it carries its own commuter load, so expect slow-and-go rather than stopped. The usual right answer between 4 pm and 9 pm.

3. Emirates Road (E611): longest, most reliable

The outer bypass. Adds real distance, but it's the only route that holds near-highway speeds through the worst windows. Coming from New Dubai (Marina, JVC, Motor City) it's often faster than cutting across town to Ittihad anyway.

Coming back Sharjah→Dubai, mirror it: mornings 6:30-9:30 are the disaster window, evenings are manageable.

No car? The bus does fine

Intercity buses link Union and Al Ghubaiba in Dubai with Sharjah's Al Jubail station every 10-20 minutes for around AED 10-12 (Nol card from the Dubai side). They ride the same roads, so time them with the same table. For the full intercity picture, see our Abu Dhabi-Dubai bus guide and the live traffic page.

One-line version: daytime = Ittihad, evening = E311, New Dubai or Friday = E611, and always glance at the map above before you commit.

Is the drive worth planning around?

Yes, more than any other trip in the UAE. The same 18 km costs 20 minutes or 90 depending on a decision you make before turning the key. Set a calendar reminder to leave before 4 pm or after 8:30, and Sharjah stays a neighbour instead of a punishment.
